The short answer: you cannot
Wix does not let you export your site. This is not a setting you have
missed, and it is not a feature waiting behind a higher plan. Wix's own support
documentation states that sites cannot be moved to another host.
The reason is real rather than spiteful. A Wix site runs on Wix's own software the
way an app runs on a phone. There is no folder of files sitting somewhere that could
be handed to you. Compare WordPress, which gives you a database, or Webflow, which
hands you HTML and CSS. Wix has nothing of that shape to give.
So leaving Wix always means rebuilding. Everything below is about making that
rebuild cheap instead of painful.
What you can get out
- Your CMS collections, as CSV. Anything you built on a Wix CMS collection
exports to a spreadsheet you can open in Excel or Google Sheets and import
elsewhere. This is the cleanest export Wix offers.
- Your Wix Stores product list. Products export. Order history and customer
records are a separate and much harder question.
- Your text and images, by hand. Copy, paste, and save each image. Slow,
but nothing is lost that way.
- Your domain. If you registered it through Wix it is yours to transfer,
subject to the usual sixty day lock after a registration or a recent transfer.
What stays behind
- The design and the layout. Rebuilt on the other side, always.
- A full blog export. Unlike WordPress, Wix does not hand you an XML file
of your posts. If you have been writing for years, this is usually the worst of
it.
- Media in a form that transfers cleanly. Images, video and PDFs are stored
in a way that does not lift out neatly, so they come across one at a time.
- Velo code. Anything custom runs inside Wix's own runtime and is exactly
as portable as the rest of the site, which is to say not at all.
The trap most people hit
Wix fixes the address of every blog post to a path it chooses, with
/post/ in the middle. You did not pick those addresses and you cannot
change them, but search engines have them indexed. When you move, every one of them
needs a redirect to its new home or the traffic those posts earn simply stops.
Collect that list before you cancel, because afterwards there is nowhere left
to read it from.
The order to do it in
- List every page and post address you have, including the ones you forgot.
- Export the CMS collections and the product list while the account is live.
- Save your images at the largest size available.
- Build the new site and get it working before touching the old one.
- Point the domain across, with the redirects already in place.
- Then cancel Wix, and not before.
If it looks like a lot of work, that is because it is
A five page site with a few photographs is an afternoon. Eight years of blog posts,
a shop and a booking system is not, and anyone quoting you without looking at your
pages is guessing.
We do this for people. We rebuild the site properly, map every redirect
before anything switches over, and your old site stays up until you tell us you are
happy with the new one. From CA$1,800, quoted after we look at your pages rather
than guessed. Tell us about your site.
